What Your Agent Should Do After You Buy a Home

Home Buying Tips Jeff Lang September 23, 2026

From critical dates to annual equity reviews, here's what working with me looks like long after the sale closes.

Your offer just got accepted. After months of touring homes, studying disclosures, reading the market, and crafting an offer strong enough to win, you finally heard yes. Take a second to enjoy it, because it's a big deal.

Then know this. The moment the excitement settles is the moment the real work begins, and that work is mine to carry, not yours.

You always know what's next. Within about 12 hours of acceptance, an email lands in your inbox with every critical date in the transaction mapped out, so nothing important sneaks up on you. Within the week, you get what I jokingly call a booklet, a clear rundown of everything to handle between now and closing. Transferring utilities, forwarding mail, the details that are easy to forget, laid out specifically for your situation, both the home you're leaving and the one you're moving into. The goal is simple. You should never wonder what happens next.

I don't disappear after closing. Plenty of agents disappear once the keys change hands. I do the opposite. Soon after you close and start to settle in, I'll check in to make sure things are going smoothly, see if there's anything I can help with, and stay a resource for anything real estate-related, indefinitely. This isn't the end of our relationship. It's the start of a longer one.

"The moment the excitement settles is the moment the real work begins."

Yearly reviews track your equity. Your home is likely your largest asset, so I treat it like one. Every year on your home anniversary, we'll meet in person or hop on a Zoom to talk through the market and where your equity stands, the same way a financial planner reviews your portfolio. It keeps you informed year after year instead of guessing what your home is worth, and it means you're never making a future move without current numbers in front of you.

Your documents stay in one place. There's also a practical perk that pays off long after closing. Every document from your transaction lives in one hub, the same tool we use to communicate throughout. When tax time rolls around, or you simply need to find something down the road, it's all right there, accessible whenever you need it.

Here's what I hope for most, though. Beyond the real estate partnership, I'd love for this to become a genuine friendship, the kind where we grab coffee, catch up, and stay in each other's lives well past the closing table.
